Refurbishment of a hook type gate at Lavamünd Power Plant
General: | Year of construction 1943 Riveted construction Width 24 m Height (of damming) 11 m Weight of Upper Gate: appr. 80 mtons Weight of Lower Gate: appr. 140 mtons |
Design: | Designed (as usual up to the
middle of the 20th century) as riveted body. Welding was used for seal welds only. The repair-concept had to consider these facts. |
Damage: | The gate was heavily damaged by a defect of the drive system: the upper gate was lifted unbalanced to an inclination of appr. 2,5 m. The gate has got jammed in the guides, for removal of the gate some components as drive chains, chain-columns and overflow guide plates had to be cut off. |
Repair: | The destroyed riveted parts were replaced by new designed welded parts. The welded parts were connected to the riveted gate by close-tolerance bolts. Undamaged parts were reused whenever possible. |
Order: | Redesign and dimensioning of new welded parts.. |

Frame runner wheel cases from downstream. The wheel cases were heavily warped and replaced by welded components, fitted by close-tolerance bolts to the structure.
The left chain column was cut-off during removal of the gate. Both chain columns were replaced by new columns in welded design. |
|
Dead end frame and end frame were also damaged and had to be replaced. The new welded design was fitted in site and bolted to the existing structure.
